Party scorecard

2BJP won (Meerut T, Meerut G)
4BJP ahead
2SP ahead (Varanasi T, Agra T)
3No trend (Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra G)

Before this election, the BJP held six of these 11 seats and the SP three, with one each held by an independent and a teachers' group. If current trends hold, the BJP would match or improve on its six, while the SP's hopes rest on Varanasi and Agra teachers' seats and the three graduates' seats still to report — including Varanasi, which it won in 2020.

Biggest moments of counting day

  • Meerut first: The BJP's first wins came from Meerut, where the SP's graduates' candidate conceded. Winning candidate Dinesh Goyal said voters had backed development.
  • Agra halt: Counting in the Agra teachers' seat was paused for about three hours over doubtful ballots; the SP alleged a deliberate halt while its candidate was ahead, and its workers protested outside the counting centre.
  • Gorakhpur boxes: A ballot box from Deoria was found with a broken seal and one from Mau contained 52 more ballots than recorded at sealing; both were set aside or re-tallied.
  • Lucknow clash: BJP and SP workers scuffled outside the Lucknow counting centre in the evening; police intervened.
  • Akhilesh Yadav vs the EC: The SP president asked Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to intervene, alleging that counting was being deliberately slowed where SP candidates were ahead. SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav said the party would join a "Vote Bachao" rally at Ramlila Maidan on 1 November. The Election Commission had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of writing.

When will all results be declared?

The teachers' seats should be declared late on Tuesday night. The graduates' seats — with 11.86 lakh electors in all and up to 20 rounds per seat — are likely to run into Wednesday, 28 October, especially where no candidate reaches the quota on first preferences.
