Election news is full of short forms — SIR, SSR, BLO, EPIC, ERO — and official forms rarely explain them. This page gives you the full form of SIR in English and Hindi, explains each letter, and then lists the other election abbreviations every voter in Uttar Pradesh is likely to come across before the 2027 elections.
SIR full form, letter by letter
| Letter | English | Hindi | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Special | विशेष | Ordered specially by the Election Commission, not part of the yearly routine |
| I | Intensive | गहन | Thorough — every household is visited and every voter re-checked |
| R | Revision | पुनरीक्षण | The voter list is revised and published afresh |
So "SIR of electoral rolls" — मतदाता सूची का विशेष गहन पुनरीक्षण — means a special, thorough revision of the voter list. It is done under Section 21(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. For how it works and what it did to UP's voter list, read What is SIR in election? or the simpler SIR election kya hai.
Don't confuse SIR with SSR
| Short form | Full form | Hindi | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIR | Special Intensive Revision | विशेष गहन पुनरीक्षण | Occasional, house-to-house — UP's ran from November 2025 to April 2026 |
| SSR | Special Summary Revision | विशेष संक्षिप्त पुनरीक्षण | Every year — the current one runs from 2 November 2026 to 4 January 2027 |
In an SIR, every voter must fill an enumeration form. In an SSR, only people who want to add, delete or correct an entry need to apply.

Why the SIR full form is in the news
SIR has been carried out across most of India since June 2025 — first in Bihar, then in 12 states and UTs including Uttar Pradesh, and from May 2026 in 16 more states and 3 UTs. In UP, it cut the voter list from 15.44 crore to 13.40 crore names. With the UP Assembly election due in early 2027, the most important thing is not the full form but what follows from it: check that your name is on the list, and if it is not, apply with Form 6 before 11 December 2026.
