Live status — Wednesday, 28 October 2026, afternoon: After five rounds of counting in the Lucknow Khand Graduates' seat, the SP's Kanti Singh has 32,228 votes and the BJP's sitting MLC Avanish Kumar Singh has 21,843 — a lead of 10,385. Some reports round it to about 10,500. Counting continues at Ramabai Rally Ground, Lucknow; figures are unofficial until the Returning Officer declares the result.

The BJP's run of wins in the Lucknow division has stopped at the teachers' seat. In the much bigger graduates' contest, the Samajwadi Party's Kanti Singh has led from the early hours, and her lead has grown in every round reported since. The BJP's Avanish Kumar Singh, who beat her in 2020, has trailed throughout.

How the SP's lead has grown

Lucknow graduates' MLC 2026: SP's lead grew from about 1,400 in early counting to about 7,600 after round 4 and 10,385 after round 5; in 2020 the BJP won by 6,403

Stage Kanti Singh (SP) Avanish Kumar Singh (BJP) SP lead
Early counting, Tuesday night — — about 1,400 (unofficial)
After round 4, Wednesday morning — — about 7,600
After round 5, Wednesday afternoon 32,228 21,843 10,385

Round-5 figures as reported by Amar Ujala. Earlier leads as reported by Sandesh Wahak and Patrika; candidate-wise totals for those stages were not published.

How much is left to count?

More than one lakh graduates voted in the seat. According to Patrika, three rounds were still to be counted after round four — so two rounds remain after round five. If Kanti Singh keeps her current pace, she would finish first-preference counting at around 45,000 votes. That projection is our own, simply scaling her five-round total.

The quota will be half the valid votes plus one — roughly 50,000 if there are about one lakh valid ballots. If nobody reaches the quota on first preferences, the lowest candidates are eliminated one by one and their second preferences transferred, as happened in 2020. But with a lead of more than 10,000 votes, the BJP would need an overwhelming share of the transfers to catch up.

A 2020 rematch, reversed

2020 2026 (so far)
Avanish Kumar Singh Won (BJP) Trailing by 10,385
Kanti Singh Lost by 6,403 (as an independent) Leading (SP candidate)
How it was decided After preference counting Counting continues

In 2020, Kanti Singh fought as an independent and lost after preference counting. This time she is contesting as the Samajwadi Party's candidate, and she has led at every stage reported so far. Turnout was low at 38.02% — just 34.51% in Lucknow district, which alone has 96,070 graduate electors.

Counting-hall disputes

An SP counting agent objected that one box held 317 ballots but only 310 matching slips, and asked whose the extra seven votes were. No official response was reported, and the objection has not been verified. Both parties traded allegations throughout the count at Ramabai Rally Ground, where the graduates' votes are being counted in Hall 7 on 14 tables.

What a Lucknow win would mean

Lucknow is the state capital and the BJP has held this graduates' seat since 2020. If Kanti Singh's lead holds, the SP would take its second graduates' seat of the day after Allahabad-Jhansi, where Dr Man Singh Yadav won by 27,663. In the same division, the BJP's Umesh Dwivedi won the teachers' seat for a third straight term, so the two Lucknow seats would be split between the parties.
