Live status — Wednesday, 28 October 2026, morning: Official results have been declared on 6 of the 11 seats: BJP 5, SP 1. Counting continues on the other five, where the SP is ahead on 3, the BJP on 1 and an independent on 1, according to live updates. The BJP has emerged as the clear front-runner in the 2026 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections. By Wednesday morning it had won five of the six seats declared so far — including three of the six teachers' seats, traditionally the hardest for political parties to win. The Samajwadi Party's one win came in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency, where Lal Bihari Yadav kept the teachers' seat. But the race is not over: the SP is ahead on three of the five seats still being counted, and one seat may go to an independent.

Gorakhpur-Faizabad: the seat that may go independent

The only seat where an independent is in the top two is Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers'. With first-preference counting complete — 40,811 valid and 2,800 invalid ballots — the BJP's Dhruv Tripathi led the independent Rajeev Yadav by just 466 votes. Nobody came near the quota of 20,406, so the result depends on transfers. The biggest bloc to be transferred is the SP candidate's 8,301 votes, once he is eliminated — and where those voters' second preferences go will decide the seat. SP candidate Dr Sanjayan Tripathi has alleged that the trend changed suddenly after the third round and walked out of the counting; his allegations have not been verified. Read the Gorakhpur round-1 report.

What the numbers add up to

Going into this election, the BJP held six of these 11 seats and the SP three, with the other two held by non-party teacher candidates. On Wednesday morning's numbers — five BJP wins, one SP win, and leads for the SP on three, the BJP on one and an independent on one — the final tally would be BJP 6, SP 4, independent 1 if every lead holds. That would leave the BJP where it started and give the SP one more seat. But three of the five leads are narrow or early, so either party could still finish higher.

A rough counting night

  • Agra: A scuffle broke out in the teachers' counting hall at about 12:30 am; both candidates said they were assaulted, two people were detained and police have ordered an inquiry. The BJP candidate walked out before dawn.
  • Gorakhpur: The SP boycotted the counting, alleging irregularities.
  • Lucknow: Protests over alleged counting irregularities held up the teachers' result by about two hours; it was announced at around 2:15 am.

Results on all 11 seats are expected by Wednesday evening. For yesterday's round-by-round coverage, see the 27 October scoreboard.
