The BJP is heading for a comfortable hold in western Uttar Pradesh's teachers' seat. Is Dhillon on course to win on first preferences?
A candidate needs the quota — half of all valid votes plus one — to be elected. About 35,000 teachers voted in this seat (73.69% of roughly 47,700 electors), so once invalid ballots are set aside the quota will be at most about 17,600. With 14,990 votes already counted for Dhillon and more rounds still to come, he is on course to cross the quota on first preferences alone if the pattern of the first three rounds continues — which would mean no elimination rounds and an early declaration.
Dhillon's share so far is far higher than in 2020, when he won this seat with 12,827 votes against 4,864 for the SP's Sanjay Kumar Mishra — a margin of 7,963.
The contest
- Dr Hari Singh Dhillon (BJP) — sitting MLC since 2020, seeking a second term.
- Haji Danish Akhtar (SP) — the Samajwadi Party's candidate.
- 15 others, including independents and teacher-association candidates, making this the most crowded teachers' seat of the round.
The constituency spans the Bareilly and Moradabad divisions, and teachers voted at 105 polling booths on 23 October. Its turnout of 73.69% was the second highest of the 11 seats, behind only Gorakhpur-Faizabad.
What it means for the BJP
With the BJP already declared winner in both Meerut seats, a Bareilly-Moradabad win would add a third seat to its tally on counting day and keep this teachers' seat in the party's hands for a second term. For the overall picture, see the UP MLC result scoreboard.
