SIR Election Kya Hai? SIR (विशेष गहन पुनरीक्षण) Explained in Simple Words — What It Means for Your Vote and What to Do Now
SIR election kya hai? In simple words, SIR — Special Intensive Revision, or vishesh gahan punrikshan — is when the Election Commission checks the whole voter list again, house by house. Here is what it means for your vote, how to check whether your name survived, and what to do if it was deleted.

In short: SIR means Special Intensive Revision — the Election Commission re-checks every name on the voter list by sending Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to every house. If your enumeration form was not returned, your name may have been dropped. Check your name now, and apply with Form 6 if it is missing.
Since late 2025, "SIR" has become one of the most searched election words in Uttar Pradesh. Many families saw a BLO at the door with a printed form; others found out only later that a relative's name had disappeared from the list. This guide explains SIR in plain words — with the Hindi terms you will see on official forms — and tells you exactly what to do.
SIR election kya hai? The simple meaning
Think of the voter list (मतदाता सूची, matdata suchi) as a register that has been edited every year for more than two decades. Over time it collects errors — people who have died, moved away or been listed twice. In an SIR, the Election Commission stops patching the old register and re-checks every single entry. Every voter has to be counted again (गणना, ganana) through an enumeration form (गणना प्रपत्र, ganana prapatra).
- S — Special (विशेष): ordered specially by the Election Commission, outside the normal yearly cycle.
- I — Intensive (गहन): thorough — every household is visited.
- R — Revision (पुनरीक्षण): the voter list is revised and published again.

What happens during SIR — from a voter's point of view

- The BLO comes to your house with a pre-filled form for each voter registered at that address.
- You check and sign the form — adding your photo and mobile number if asked — and return it to the BLO, or submit it online at voters.eci.gov.in where available.
- The draft list (प्रारूप सूची) is published. If your form was not returned, your name will not be on it.
- Claims and objections (दावे और आपत्तियाँ): for about a month you can apply to add your name or object to a wrong one. You may get a notice from the ERO to show a document.
- The final list (अंतिम सूची) is published and used in the next election.
SIR in Uttar Pradesh: what happened
| Stage | Date | Voters |
|---|---|---|
| Voter list before SIR | — | 15.44 crore |
| Draft list (प्रारूप सूची) | 6 January 2026 | 12.56 crore — about 2.89 crore names left out |
| Final list (अंतिम सूची) | 10 April 2026 | 13.40 crore — about 84 lakh added back or newly enrolled |
Of the 2.89 crore names left out of the draft, the Chief Electoral Officer's figures put about 46 lakh as dead, 2.17 crore as not found at their address and about 25 lakh as duplicates. If a family member moved to another city for work, or a form was simply not collected, their name could be among those dropped.
Is my name still on the list? How to check
- Go to voters.eci.gov.in or electoralsearch.eci.gov.in.
- Search by your EPIC number (the number on your voter ID card), by your details, or by mobile number.
- Or download your booth's PDF list from ceouttarpradesh.nic.in and look for your name.
- You can also ask your BLO, or call the voter helpline 1950.
Step-by-step instructions are in our guide: how to see your name in the voter list 2027.
SIR mein naam kat gaya? What to do
| Your situation | What to do | Form |
|---|---|---|
| Your name is missing, but you live at the address | Apply for inclusion with proof of age and address | Form 6 (फॉर्म 6) |
| You turn 18 on or before 1 January 2027 | Apply as a new voter | Form 6 |
| A dead or shifted person is still listed | Object to the entry | Form 7 (फॉर्म 7) |
| Your name, age, photo or address is wrong, or you moved within UP | Ask for correction or shifting | Form 8 (फॉर्म 8) |
Right now there is a good window to fix this. The Election Commission's yearly revision for 2027 is under way: the draft roll will be published on 12 November 2026, claims and objections can be filed from then until 11 December 2026, and the final roll will be published on 4 January 2027 — just before the UP Assembly election. You can file the forms online at voters.eci.gov.in or through the Voter Helpline app, or hand them to your BLO. Our Form 6 guide covers the documents.
