The early-2027 states
Uttar Pradesh — the biggest prize
The BJP won 255 of 403 seats in 2022 and is seeking a third straight term under Yogi Adityanath, against the Samajwadi Party-led opposition. UP's voter list went through a Special Intensive Revision: the final roll of 10 April 2026 has 13,39,84,792 electors, about 2.05 crore fewer than before. In 2022, UP voted in seven phases between 10 February and 7 March, with results on 10 March. Reports suggest polling in 2027 could again begin in late February or early March. Punjab
The Aam Aadmi Party swept Punjab in 2022 and Bhagwant Mann is completing his first term. Punjab's SIR was part of Phase 3, with its final roll in October 2026.
Uttarakhand
The BJP's Pushkar Singh Dhami will seek a third term for his party in the hill state. Its SIR final roll was due in September 2026.
Goa
Goa's 40-seat assembly, led by the BJP's Pramod Sawant, is the smallest of the seven. Goa's SIR (Phase 2) cut its electorate to about 10.6 lakh, a fall of about 10%.
Manipur
Manipur was under President's Rule for about a year until it was revoked in February 2026, when the BJP's Yumnam Khemchand Singh became Chief Minister. Its SIR final roll, published in September 2026, has about 19.3 lakh electors.
The end-of-2027 states
Gujarat (182 seats), where the BJP won a record 156 seats in 2022, and Himachal Pradesh (68 seats), where the Congress won in 2022, are due to vote around November–December 2027. Himachal Pradesh's SIR has not yet been scheduled — the Election Commission left it, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh out of Phase 3 and said dates would be announced later.
Other elections in 2027
- President of India — July 2027: President Droupadi Murmu's five-year term, which began on 25 July 2022, ends in July 2027. The President is elected by MPs and MLAs, so the 2027 assembly results will affect the electoral college.
- UP panchayat elections: The Allahabad High Court ordered on 14 October 2026 that UP's overdue panchayat polls be completed within three months, which would push them into January 2027 unless the order is challenged.
- Rajya Sabha and local bodies: Several Rajya Sabha seats and municipal bodies are also due in 2027.
What the Election Commission has already done
- Voter lists: A Special Summary Revision began on 2 November 2026 in the poll-bound states with 1 January 2027 as the qualifying date. The final rolls are due on 4 January 2027. If you will be 18 by then, apply with Form 6.
- Officer transfers: On 27 October 2026, the Commission told the five early-2027 states to move election officers who have spent three of the last four years in a district, with deadlines of 31 March 2027 (Punjab, Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand) and 31 May 2027 (UP).
- Census overlap: The Centre advanced Census enumeration in UP, Punjab, Goa and snow-bound parts of Uttarakhand to 1 December 2026 – 4 January 2027 so that it does not clash with the polls, according to reports.
