Agra Teachers': how the SP crossed the line
Dr Akash Agarwal led on first preferences, 13,087 to 9,389, but was short of the quota. Of 29,865 ballots, 2,128 were invalid, leaving 27,737 valid votes and a quota of 13,869. After second preferences were transferred, he finished with 14,046 — just 177 votes above the quota — while Hari Kishore Tiwari reached 9,783. Agarwal, who won the seat as an independent in 2020, has now won it for the Samajwadi Party. Read the Agra and Varanasi report.

What the final tally could look like
If the three current leads hold, the final result would be BJP 6, SP 5. Going into this election, the BJP held six of these seats, the SP three, and non-party teacher candidates two. That would leave the BJP unchanged and lift the SP from three seats to five, while the two seats won by independents in 2020 would go to the parties — Agra Teachers' to the SP and, if Dhruv Tripathi holds on, Gorakhpur-Faizabad to the BJP.

Disputes along the way
- Varanasi: SP MP Virendra Singh said the Varanasi teachers' result was declared about six hours after Lal Bihari Yadav had already won. In the graduates' seat, Ashutosh Sinha complained that round results were not being displayed and asked the Election Commission to take note; the District Magistrate then posted the vote list on X.
- Agra: Both candidates alleged assault after a late-night clash in the counting hall; police have ordered an inquiry.
- Gorakhpur: The SP boycotted the count, and a complaint was filed against the Returning Officer. An additional commissioner from Ayodhya was taken off counting duty after a complaint.
None of these allegations has been independently verified. The remaining results are expected later on Wednesday.
