Western Maharashtra's most closely watched co-operative contest went down to the wire. The Gokul election was fought as a direct prestige battle between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and Satej Patil, who contested separately after being left out of the Mahayuti arrangement. After a day of shifting trends, recount demands and allegations of delay, Patil's panel emerged with a one-seat majority.

Final figures as reported by PTI and the Kolhapur edition of Sakal after counting ended. Some early reports carried interim leads of 16–9 and 14–11 before recounts narrowed the gap.

How counting day unfolded (live timeline)

  • Sunday, 18 October: Polling at 35 booths across Kolhapur district under heavy security. Of 5,418 eligible voters — delegates representing primary milk co-operative societies — 5,416 voted, a turnout of 99.96%. No incidents were reported.
  • Monday, 19 October, morning: Counting began at Ramanmala, Kolhapur, on 35 tables. For the first time, votes were counted centre-wise, and the first results were expected by around 11 am.
  • Afternoon: Early trends showed Satej Patil's Aghadi comfortably ahead — reports at one point put it at 16–9.
  • Evening: Several narrowly defeated Mahayuti candidates demanded recounts. The margin tightened to 14–11, and Patil alleged that officials were deliberately delaying the declaration of results.
  • Late night: After recounts in close seats, the final result was declared: 13 for Patil's Aghadi, 12 for the Mahayuti-backed panel. Local reports described about three hours of political drama before the declaration.

Big names who lost

The result's biggest headline was the defeat of several heavyweights from the Mahayuti side, including three former chairmen of Gokul:

Candidate Who they are Result
Navid Mushrif Outgoing chairman; son of minister Hasan Mushrif Lost the OBC-category seat to Shashikant Khot of Patil's panel — by 69 votes, according to Deccan Chronicle
Shoumika Mahadik Former director; wife of BJP leader Dhananjay Mahadik Lost by a handful of votes (reported as seven) and lost again after a recount
Arun Dongale Former Gokul chairman Lost
Vishwas Patil Former Gokul chairman Lost
Sujit Minchekar Former MLA Lost

Both candidates of the Jansurajya Shakti party, a Mahayuti constituent, also lost. Local media counted eleven new faces on the new 25-member board.

What the leaders said

Satej Patil framed the win as a vote for local control. "The members want Gokul to be run by people from Kolhapur and not by those sitting in Mumbai," he said, arguing that the Mahayuti panel's candidates had been finalised in Mumbai. He also alleged that 98 votes were wrongly declared invalid and that, had they been counted, about six more candidates from his panel would have won. At a press conference the next day he pointed to internal disputes among Mahayuti partners — the BJP, NCP (Ajit Pawar), Shiv Sena (Shinde) and Jansurajya Party — over candidate selection.

Hasan Mushrif accepted the verdict, saying the decision of farmers must be respected. He cited friction within the Mahayuti alliance, which he said lasted until the final stages, and the high number of invalid votes as possible reasons for the loss.

What Satej Patil's panel has promised

  • Raise Gokul's daily milk collection from about 20 lakh litres to 30 lakh litres.
  • Increase procurement prices paid to farmers by ₹5 per litre for buffalo milk and ₹2 per litre for cow milk.

Why the Gokul result matters

Gokul is Maharashtra's biggest dairy co-operative, with a turnover of nearly ₹4,000 crore (₹3,966.28 crore in 2024–25) and a network that reaches about 4.41 lakh milk producers in roughly 1,810 villages. Control of its board brings influence in almost every village of Kolhapur district — which is why ministers, MPs and MLAs from the ruling alliance campaigned for their panel, and why the result is being read as a setback for the Mahayuti in western Maharashtra and a boost for Satej Patil personally. Within days, a banner hailing Patil as a "future Chief Minister" appeared in Kolhapur, underlining the political stakes.

What happens next

The new board of directors will elect Gokul's chairman (adhyaksha) and vice-chairman at its first meeting, on a date to be notified by the co-operative election authority. With a 13–12 split, the chairmanship contest will be watched closely. We will update this page when the new chairman is chosen.
